You can read this article in German, French, Italian, or English.

This article provides specific information about local laws that apply to people who host their homes in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. Just like our country article for Switzerland, it’s your responsibility to verify and comply with any obligations that apply to you as a host. This article can serve as a starting point or place you can come back to if you have questions but it isn’t exhaustive and it doesn’t constitute legal or tax advice. It’s a good idea to check to make sure laws and procedures are current.

Some of the laws that might affect you are complicated. Contact the Cantonal Office for Business and Labor directly or consult a local advisor, such as an attorney or tax professional, if you have questions.

Canton of Basel-Stadt guest tax

As of 1 January, 2018, the Canton of Basel-Stadt levies a guest tax on all overnight accommodations within the canton. The revenues from the guest tax are used to create and maintain the tourist infrastructure.

BaselCard

One benefit of the guest tax that guests receive is the BaselCard. The BaselCard provides a number of benefits, including free public transport in Basel and the region and guest WiFi. Additionally, guests can use the BaselCard for discounted admission to certain cultural and leisure activities.

As a host, you're responsible for providing BaselCards to your guests. Therefore, you should register as a host with the relevant authorities before welcoming your first guests and apply to receive BaselCards to be sent.

Collection

Since 1 September, 2018, Airbnb has automatically collected the cantonal guest tax and paid it to the cantonal tourism department on your behalf. Guests will see the tax listed separately on their invoices and added to the total amount they pay.
