The ’Salinas de Torrevieja’ or Salt Lakes are a key feature of Torrevieja. Notable for their pink, sometime mauve hue, they are home to 2000 flamingos during migratory seasons. Salt has been commercially farmed there for more than 200 years and is shipped to countries all over Europe. It is believed that living within the vicinity can have positive benefits for health and wellbeing. The pink colour has been attributed to a rare type of micro-algae that thrives in exceptionally salty conditions. This algae produces a pink dye to help it better absorb sunlight under the surface of the water.
If of interest, tours are available, normally running between March and September which detail the history and uses of the salt as well as pointing out the indigenous flora and fauna in the region.
