Joaquin Miller Park has hikes, a playground, a baseball diamond and a beautiful fountain and amphitheater with music and musicals (Woodminster Musicals). Great views from the top. Lots of mountain biking trails through the park.

Piedmont Avenue is about 10 minutes away, and has a variety of restaurants, coffee shops, and gift boutiques. Parking can be a little challenging, but there is a public lot that usually has space.

Redwood bowl is a large open area with picnic tables, bathrooms, parking - surrounded by trees right next door to Chabot Space and Science. Easy spot to kick off a hike or have a picnic with little ones.

Food scene
A few favorite spots to grab a bite that are in nearby Montclair off the Park Ave Exit. Piedmont Ave has a much larger selection of restaurants (I made a separate section, and that's where we normally eat), but we have a few in Montclair.
Great cafe nearby. They make their own pastries and have a wonderful roasted vegetable sandwich. Super casual spot.

There's a Round Table pizza right on Joaquin Miller, but I recommend Red Boy Pizza. Its a small local chain and they have a great sourdough crust with variety of toppings. It's by the Safeway on Redwood road if you want to pick up or eat there, and they also deliver.
