Basically an abandoned naval town/ base. You can go to the park on the South end and climb the hill for an overview.

Because Vallejo has a long and rich maritime history the Mare Island Historic Park Foundation is a great place to learn all about it. Vallejo also houses the Cal Maritime Academy which is the only Maritime Academy on the West Coast.

For over a century, Mare Island was the Navy's Naval Shipyard. The whole shipyard is listed as a National Historic Landmark.
