Down the river in Houston, we got David William Chapman river guide, human foghorn. No speaker; he brings lungs, and the water does percussion. He yaps stories stacked like lawn chairs. Mid-cruise he detours into a childhood saga about walking a cat on a leash because he lost one once; you can practically hear the tiny bell and kid-sized cussing. Then he whips out his phone to showcase a proud glam shot of his wife’s very large backside, like it’s a roadside attraction. He swears Thor found him by searching “big dicks,” delivered with the confidence of a weather alert. We dock, he insists on driving us home, then curbs the shit out of his van like he’s sanding the rims, parks half a foot onto the sidewalk, shrugs, cracks a beer. We play ping pong while he serves backspin and gossip, laughing like a loose muffler. Boundaries? None. Hospitality? Loud and overflowing. and ask him about his cat that jump ropes.
